His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana concluded a four-day State visit to the Republic of Belarus from 5th to 9th June 2026, at the invitation of His Excellency President Aleksandr Lukashenko.
The visit marked the first bilateral state visit by a Ghanaian Head of State to Belarus since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1992. The visit was aimed at deepening political dialogue and expanding cooperation in agriculture, trade, education, and visa waiver for holders of diplomatic and service passports.
Key Highlights of the Visit
Upon arrival in Minsk on 5th June, President Mahama was accorded the usual arrival courtesies. He laid wreathe at the Victory Monument Park in honour of Belarusian fallen heroes during the Second World War. On 6th –7th June, he travelled to Brest Oblast, where he toured the Dairy processing plant of JSC Savushkin Product, its machinery facilities and also visited the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex where he laid flowers in honour of the Soviet Garrison which fought to resist the invasion of the Nazis in 1941.
On 8th June, President Mahama was received at the Palace of Independence in Minsk with a Guard of Honour. The two leaders held bilateral talks covering agricultural mechanisation, supply of tractors, agro-industrial cooperation, and broader economic collaboration among others.
Following the talks, Ghana and Belarus signed four Agreements and Memorandum of Understanding on:
1. MOU on Agricultural mechanisation and tractor supply
2. Agreement on Economic and technical cooperation
3. Agreement on Visa Waivers for holders of diplomatic and service passports.
4. Agreement Between the Chambers of Commerce of both countries.
Later that afternoon, President Mahama addressed the Ghana-Belarus Business Forum in Minsk.
President Mahama, in his speech invited Belarusian companies to partner Ghanaian companies under the 24-Hour Economy and industrialisation agenda. The forum brought together a sizeable number of business leaders from both countries and marked the official launch of expanded economic engagement.
On Tuesday 9th June, President Mahama departed Minsk for Accra.
Significance of the Visit
Strengthening Ghana-Belarus Relations:
The visit has elevated Ghana-Belarus relations to a new level of partnership. The agreements concluded are expected to support Ghana’s mechanisation drive, expand trade opportunities, and increase scholarships for Ghanaian students in technical and agricultural fields.
The visit has paved the way for the Ghana Mission in Moscow to leverage on the opportunities now made possible and to commit to advancing the outcomes of the engagements for the benefit of the people of Ghana.
